Our Current Top-Priority
Projects Are:
a career conference for middle school girls interested in professions in
the math and science fields, co-sponsored by AAUW Long Beach Branch and Long Beach City
College Pacific Coast Campus. Our latest conference took place
in Spring 2008, when more than 150 girls participated. Attendance is by invitation only to middle school girls in the Long
Beach Unified School District.
AAUW members are also involved in an ongoing program to help struggling
readers improve their reading skills. For the past three years, Long Beach Branch members
have been devoting an hour a week at Constellation Community Middle School to work with 6th
and 7th grade students to gain confidence in their reading abilities. The
school provides reading materials and an orientation. The most important skill you need as
a tutor is the desire to help these young people and to share your enjoyment for reading.
If you would like to be a reading tutor contact Daphne Ching-Jackson at Constellation, 562.435.7181.
an ongoing
Mentoring Program for at-risk middle and high school girls. In 2001 the Long Beach
Community Partnership and Press-Telegram newspaper presented this program with a
"Unity of our Community" award for its contributions. We are included in
the Governor's Mentoring Program database and collaborate with the California Mentoring
Initiative and other mentoring groups.

Interesting
Groups!
The Long Beach Branch has
several "interest groups" who meet to foster friendship, fun and learning.
Many of them meet at our
own welcoming headquarters. "Interest
groups" include:
Members also enjoy our Golf Group, Gourmet Cooking and
Dining, and are Film Fans. Any member is free to join or initiate an interest group.
OUR POPULAR LUNCHEON MEETINGS
for members and their guests are usually held on the first Saturday of the month, from
September through June. They feature stimulating guest speakers or talented members
of the performing arts and provide members with opportunities for networking.
Recently we have added breakfast and dinner meetings, and enjoy a festive Holiday Wassail
in December, to which prospective members are invited.
RECENT HONORS include receiving both local and regional Soroptimist International awards as an "Organization
Advancing the Status of Women," plus an award from TALB (Teachers' Association of
Long Beach) for achievement in the area of human rights.
We invite you to come and get acquainted at our next Branch Meeting or visit one of our Interest Groups!
